Assessment 4: Research Discussion Essay
Essay Topics
Either choose one of the topics below:
1. When people move to another country, some decide to follow the customs of the new country while others believe that they should keep to their own customs. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
2. It is generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, and others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to become a good sports person or musician. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
3. Congestion charging is the most effective means of preventing traffic congestion. Discuss.
4. Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each type of crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstances of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should always be taken into account when deciding on the punishment. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
5. The advance of information technology is creating a less sociable society. Discuss.

Death penalty in your country
Do some research, on English websites or in your own language, on the situation about the death penalty in your country.
Use these questions to guide you.
Facts and statistics
- Who was the most recent execution?
- What kind of crimes attract the death penalty?
- What methods are used for execution?
- How many times per year is it carried out? Can you find annual statistics?
- How many people are currently on death row? What were their crimes? How many are women? How many are foreigners?
Cases
- What famous cases are there?
- Are there any aspects of these cases which would support or oppose the death penalty?
Opinion
- Do most people support or oppose capital punishment? Are there any differences based on age, gender, education, religion, etc? Can you find any statistical breakdown?
- Is there an abolition movement or spokesperson, such as a politician, celebrity or religious leader? Do they have much popular support?
EAP 2A Writing Portfolio
The writing portfolio essays are to be submitted individually as drafts by their respective due dates, then the whole portfolio is to be resubmitted as a final draft on Monday, 20 February, 2012.
Open the Google Docs document, make a copy , fill in the blanks and answer the essay question, then print it out for submission.
Make sure to use the formatting guidelines given in the instructions.
